Project Overview
The aim of NUMO is to provide DeFi liquidity for all holders of former fiat coins – i.e., numismatic objects – by locking their coins in vaults in exchange for Bitcoin tokens (runes).
NUMO offers a unique dual-token liquidity model for users to decide which type of liquidity (loan) they would like to receive by locking their assets:
Price-point 1, “stablecoin” rune: a fungible Bitcoin token (rune) whose value (in fiat such as USD) is pegged to the median value of the gold, silver or other precious metal in the vaulted collections. The value is pegged to the fairly stable market value of the respective metals at an overcollaterized ratio that protects against spikes in external prices. In the case of the latter, the respective number of pegged runes are burnt and their associated coins are unlocked and returned to the owner.
Price-point 2, market rune: a non-fungible Bitcoin nft (ordinal) whose value is backed by the historical (most recent auction) value of a specific coin in the vaulted collection
users also have the option to lock BTC in a multisig… for fractionalized borrowing
NUMO is a US-based project and DAO founded and led by blockchain dev OGs, experts in the numismatics industry and professional academics working in and publishing about the history of coins and currency, and their relationship to Bitcoin, on which see here and here. Our founders include Fulbright Scholars and fellows of the Bitcoin Policy Institute, graduates of the Bitcoin Startup Lab… pioneering research into stablecoins, digital currency and the meaning of value, and with established commitments to public history, open access, and equitable and sovereign finance.
All coin collections on our platform are here in the US and accessible to the public to verify in person. This provides the dual value of transparently presenting the verifiable assets that back our tokens and bringing to these coins and numismatics collections out into the public for scholarly research, public education, and the promotion of museums, archives, and libraries.
In Phase 4 of our roadmap, we will open up Numo internationally with verifiable collections abroad and with public museums of our own in the US for the vaulting of global collections. In the meantime, we are focused on establishing our lending/borrowing platform with Bitcoin tokens for DeFi, expanding our presence in the American market, and developing ways to fractionalize borrowing against numismatics assets.
In the first phase of our roadmap, we’re focused on institutional collections for two reasons:
coins in established public archives provide:
security for the assets (in terms of facilities and insurance)
established connection with auctions, which allows us to determine price-point 2
transparency: users and the public at-large can see the coins in real-life, in the US
collections in established public archives provide sufficient material assets in the form of the gold, silver and other precious metals in the collections to back the associated metals-pegged “stablecoin”
Roadmap:
Phase 1
tokenize US institutional / B2B / established numismatics collections
create stable rune backed by the gold/silver in those collections
create market (non-fungible) ordinal backed by the historical (auction) value of the coins in the collection
Phase 2
expand to smaller curated / public collections…
Phase 3
fractionalized ownership
Phase 4
NUMIS public archive / numismatic museum
full open to the public
international expansion
Revenue
fees
initial tokenizing of coin / collection
borrowing fees (0% loans, viz. Liquity, etc.)
pools / “stable”
AMM swap fees
arbitrage vis-à-vis gold and silver prices
adoption / investments
